Consuming about 5% of calories from protein is hard to avoid if you are eating sufficient food to meet your daily calorie requirements. All plant foods include protein, and even if you ate a diet of only white rice, which is not recommended you would still end up with 8% protein for the day! But would it be the right kind of protein?

Proteins are complex molecules made by assembling simple building blocks (amino acids) together in a chain (polypeptide chain). Some 20 various amino acids are used to synthesize proteins, eight or nine of which are chosen essential on depending upon the information source. The term “essential” in nourishment means that the relevant nutrient must be eaten or otherwise consumed, as the body cannot produce it.
